Tour OverviewExpand all
The Himalayas don't forgive the unprepared. Every year, thousands of pilgrims discover this truth the hard way—stranded at 11,755 feet, gasping for breath, or worse, falling victim to fake booking websites that vanish with their money. The Do Dham Yatra by Helicopter offers a solution, but only if you navigate it wisely.
This isn't just another travel guide. I've compiled verified facts from official sources, ground reports, and recent government advisories to give you the real picture—what operators won't always tell you, what the fine print actually means, and how to avoid the scams that have already cheated hundreds this season.
What Makes Do Dham Yatra by Helicopter Worth Considering?
The traditional Do Dham road journey takes 7-8 days minimum. You drive from Haridwar to Guptkashi (8 hours), trek or helicopter to Kedarnath, drive to Badrinath (another 6-7 hours), then back. It's exhausting, altitude sickness is real, and road conditions in the Himalayas change with every landslide.
The Do Dham Yatra by Helicopter compresses this into 3-4 days. You fly from Dehradun's Sahastradhara Helipad to Kedarnath (via Sersi/Phata), then to Badrinath, and back. Total flying time is under 2 hours. The rest is darshan, local sightseeing, and rest.
But here's what the brochures don't emphasize: you're trading physical exhaustion for logistical complexity. Weight limits, weather dependencies, and strict timings replace sore muscles and blisters.
Highlights: What's Actually Included
| Feature | Standard Package Details |
|---|---|
| Duration | 3 Nights / 4 Days (or Same-Day Return options) |
| Route | Dehradun → Kedarnath → Badrinath → Dehradun |
| Starting Price | ₹1,25,000 per person (before discounts) |
| Aircraft | Bell 407 / Airbus H125 / AS350 B3 |
| Capacity | 6 passengers + 1 pilot |
| Baggage Allowance | 5 kg soft duffel bag only |
| VIP Darshan | Included (subject to temple authorities) |
| Meals | All meals included (vegetarian) |
| Accommodation | 3-4 star hotels at Dehradun, Sersi/Guptkashi, Badrinath |
| Local Transport | Car transfers at Badrinath and base helipads |
What "VIP Darshan" Actually Means
You get priority queue access, not a private temple entry. During peak season (May-June), even VIP lines take 1-2 hours. Rudra Abhishek at Kedarnath or Maha Abhishek at Badrinath cost extra (₹4,300–₹6,500) and must be pre-booked .
Passenger Guidelines
Weight Restrictions (This Is Non-Negotiable)
75 kg per passenger average, 450 kg total for 6 passengers.
| Weight Scenario | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Up to 75 kg | No extra charges |
| 76–80 kg | ₹2,000 per kg overweight charge |
| Above 80 kg | Risk of being denied boarding or split into different flights |
| Wrong weight declared | No refund if deboarded at helipad |
Real talk: Weigh yourself with shoes on, phone and wallet in pocket. That's how operators measure. If you booked at 72 kg but scale shows 79 kg at Sahastradhara, you pay ₹14,000 extra or risk missing your flight.
Age & Health Rules
- Infants: Under 2 years (max 12 kg) fly free but need birth certificate for verification
- Children above 2 years: Full ticket price—no concessions
- Seniors: No upper age limit, but medical fitness certificate recommended
- Pregnant women: Generally discouraged beyond first trimester
Baggage Policy
Strictly allowed:
- One soft duffel bag (max 5 kg)
- Operators provide duffel bags during briefing—use them
Not allowed:
- Hard suitcases or trolleys
- Bags exceeding 5 kg (left behind, no exceptions)
- Excess baggage in helicopter cabin
Helicopter Type & Capacity
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Models Used | Bell 407, Airbus H125 (AS350 B3), Ecureuil |
| Engine | Single turbine (high-altitude rated) |
| Seating | 1 pilot + 6 passengers |
| Max Cabin Weight | 25 kg total baggage |
| Max Passenger Weight | 450 kg (all 6 passengers combined) |
| Cruise Speed | ~240 km/h |
| Kedarnath Shuttle Time | 7–11 minutes (Sersi/Phata to Kedarnath) |
| Dehradun to Sersi | ~30 minutes |
| Sersi to Badrinath | ~30–45 minutes |
Why this matters: These aren't spacious airline cabins. You're shoulder-to-shoulder with five other passengers. The Bell 407 has a "hoist ceiling" of 12,000+ feet, which covers Kedarnath's 11,755 feet altitude with safety margin—but only if weather permits.
Helipads of Do Dham Yatra by Helicopter
Primary Helipads
| Helipad | Location | Purpose | Altitude |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sahastradhara | Dehradun | Main base, start/end point | 2,100 ft |
| Sersi (Sirsi) | Rudraprayag district | Kedarnath shuttle base | ~2,500 ft |
| Phata | Near Guptkashi | Alternative Kedarnath base | ~3,000 ft |
| Guptkashi | Lower altitude | Backup/weather alternate | 1,319 ft |
| Kedarnath | Near temple | Final destination | 11,755 ft |
| Badrinath | 1 km from temple | Badrinath access | 10,300 ft |
How It Actually Works
You don't fly direct Dehradun → Kedarnath Temple in one hop. Here's the real flow:
- Dehradun to Sersi/Phata (30 min): Main helicopter flies you to base
- Shuttle to Kedarnath (7–11 min): Smaller shuttle flights ferry groups to temple
- Return to base (7–11 min): After darshan, shuttle back
- Sersi to Badrinath (30–45 min): Main helicopter continues
- Badrinath to Dehradun (direct or via refuel): Return journey
Important: You may be split from your family group during shuttle flights due to weight balancing. Operators like Himalayan Heli explicitly state this in their guidelines .
Health Advisory: Altitude Is No Joke
The Do Dham Yatra by Helicopter takes you from 2,100 feet (Dehradun) to 11,755 feet (Kedarnath) in under 2 hours. Your body gets no time to acclimatize.
Altitude Sickness Reality
| Altitude | Location | Risk Level | Symptoms to Watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,100 ft | Dehradun | None | Normal |
| 8,500+ ft | Flight path | Moderate | Mild headache, breathlessness |
| 10,300 ft | Badrinath | High | Nausea, dizziness, fatigue |
| 11,755 ft | Kedarnath | Very High | AMS, HACE, HAPE risk |
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) Symptoms
Early signs (act immediately):
- Persistent headache
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea/vomiting
- Weakness/dizziness
- Difficulty sleeping
Severe conditions (medical emergency):
- HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema): Confusion, disorientation, blurred vision, partial paralysis
- HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema): Persistent dry cough, chest tightness, pink frothy sputum, extreme fatigue
Pre-Yatra Health Prep
From practical experience of operators:
- Start cardio exercises 2–3 weeks before
- Consult doctor about Diamox (acetazolamide) for altitude sickness prevention
- Carry personal medical kit with painkillers, anti-nausea medication, ORS packets
- Avoid alcohol, smoking, and heavy meals 24 hours before flying
Weather & What to Wear
Best Time to Visit
| Season | Months | Weather | Helicopter Operations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer | May–June | 20–30°C, clear skies | Best period—stable weather, peak season |
| Monsoon | July–August | Heavy rain, landslides | Risky—frequent cancellations |
| Post-Monsoon | September–October | 10–20°C, crisp air | Good period, fewer crowds |
| Winter | November–April | Sub-zero, snow | Temples closed |
Clothing Essentials
Must-carry (regardless of season):
- Thermal innerwear (top and bottom)
- Heavy woolen sweater or fleece
- Windproof down jacket (sub-zero rated)
- Woolen cap and insulated gloves
- Warm socks (3–4 pairs)
- Waterproof trekking shoes with ankle support
- Sunglasses (UV protection)
- Sunscreen SPF 50+
Weather reality: Even in May, Kedarnath mornings hit -5°C with wind chill. That "pleasant 25°C" in Dehradun doesn't exist at 11,000 feet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)Expand all
Q1. Is Do Dham Yatra by Helicopter safe for senior citizens?
Yes, with precautions. The helicopter eliminates trekking strain, but altitude affects everyone. Seniors should get medical clearance, carry BP/diabetes medications, and walk slowly at temples. Several operators offer specific "senior citizen packages" with extra assistance .
Q2. Can I book Do Dham Yatra by Helicopter at the last minute?
Unlikely during peak season (May–June). Quality packages book out 2–3 months ahead. Last-minute availability only during off-peak or cancellations. Never rely on "on-spot" bookings—scammers target desperate pilgrims.
Q3. What happens if weather cancels my flight?
If officially cancelled: 75% refund (after 2 consecutive days of no flying) or rescheduling. If you choose to leave early: partial refund per cancellation policy. Extra hotel nights due to weather are your expense.
Q4. Is VIP darshan guaranteed?
Priority access is included, but "VIP" doesn't mean zero waiting. During peak periods, expect 1–2 hours even in priority queues. Special pujas (Rudra Abhishek, Maha Abhishek) cost extra and must be pre-booked.
Q5. What's the actual total cost including hidden charges?
| Component | Cost |
|---|---|
| Base package | ₹1,25,000–₹1,45,000 |
| Overweight charges (if 5kg excess) | ₹10,000 |
| Special pujas | ₹4,300–₹6,500 |
| Extra night stay (weather delay) | ₹5,000–₹7,000 |
| Tips, donations, personal expenses | ₹2,000–₹5,000 |
| Realistic total budget | ₹1,40,000–₹1,65,000 |
Q6. Can we get a full refund if we change our mind?
Only if you cancel 30+ days before departure (75% refund). Within 30 days, deductions apply. Within 15 days, no refund. "Change of mind" isn't a valid reason for full refund.
Q7. Are mobile phones allowed during flight?
Yes, but on airplane mode. Photography is allowed and encouraged—the Himalayan aerial views are spectacular. But temple interiors generally prohibit photography.
Q8. What if I have a medical emergency at Kedarnath?
Helicopter operators have ground crew at both dhams. For serious emergencies, helicopter evacuation is possible weather-permitting. Carry travel insurance covering high-altitude evacuation. Basic medical facilities exist at both temples, but serious cases require transfer to Rudraprayag or Dehradun.
Q9. Can I customize the itinerary?
Some operators (like Char Dham Hotel) offer customization options, but fixed departure tours have rigid schedules. Private charters allow flexibility but cost significantly more (₹6–8 lakhs for entire helicopter) .
Q10. Is the helicopter ride scary?
Not really. Bell 407 and Airbus H125 are stable aircraft used extensively in Himalayas. Turbulence is minimal in good weather. If you've flown in small aircraft before, this is similar. The views—snow peaks, rivers, valleys—usually distract from any nervousness.
